| I have always liked using DC,direct conversion receivers. Their sheer simplicity makes them attractive but the drawbacks can be irritating. They often suffer from breakthrough from broadcast,BC,stations and rarely have very good selectivity. I have heard of designs for high quality receivers but have been sceptical of the claims, until now! The [...] At last the rig is complete,in its box and working. Not saying it is completely finished, there will always be improvements to make but it is working well on all bands. The Rx seems very good, better than I expected. The TX is good with adequate power on all bands. The PA stage is [...] This year the GQRP club Rishworth QRP Convention Saturday 22nd October and full details can be found on the Club web site. There will also be a buildathon and display of homebrew equipment on the Friday evening not far from the main venue. More details in the QRP article on page 54 of the June [...] Update 13 April 2011 There are now some pages detailing the progress with the project –see this page. Many years ago I wanted to build the G2DAF RX and then a matching TX. Various things stopped me,mostly financial, but the idea to have a completely homebrewed multiband station has remained. Last year I [...] The idea (from G3CWI) was that we build a 2 transistor 80M TX on 27 December 2010 and then meet on the air at 2100. So,the ugly little beast below was born. Work started at 1950,OK so I left it a bit late, and the little TX was complete just before 2100. It [...] So what do you do with all the components you have salvaged from scrap electronic equipment? The answer;build a transceiver? Also,I have never really used Manhattan or ugly style, construction so it was time to find out if it worked. After the fun with the Smallwonder Labs SW+20 I decided to try another [...] During a week of very changeable weather in Wales I managed a couple of /P sessions. Setting up in an NT car park right on the coast produced some very good results. Tuning around the SSB section of 20m produced BH7PFH,VU2DK,VK4TUX,VK2IR,W6CCP,W8XH and on CW W7VV who I think was in QSO with [...] I have completed the Smallwonder SW+ 20,it is now in a diecast box and just needs the controls labelling. There is space for a keyer and the RIT which will come later. First contacts have renewed my interest in QRP. At the moment the rig is attached to an end fed half wave literally [...] I have just finished building a Small Wonder Labs SW+ 20. Nothing spectacular in that but using it for QSOs yesterday took me back to my first brush with radio. Around 50+ years ago I discovered a box of crystal set parts in my grandfather’s shed. After much haggling I was allowed to have them. [...] I came across the site of AA5TB this week and found his excellent article on end fed half-wave antennas. Like many others I have always thought that it was difficult to match the high impedance of an end fed half-wave to 50 ohms. Not true! After reading the article I made a simple matching unit [...] | |
